Today... most children learn successfully by watching short videos. By limiting our video's to under 7 minutes, we protect your child from excessive screen time and provide simple & relatable role models with a single positive message.
Your child completes 1 weekly mission focusing on the corresponding video lesson.
This daily repetition supports your childs early development of Character and Leadership behaviors that transform into positive habits.

Audra has a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development & Family Ecology, with a minor in Psychology, and a specialization in Child Life. While co-creating the Character and Leadership Development curriculum at their martial arts school, Audra was also working with many school districts teaching elementary students how to stand up for themselves against the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
Audra has also worked with many Fortune 500 companies and Corporate Leaders sharing the knowledge and facilitating sessions from the Leadership Icon of the world, Dale Carnegie (How to Win Friends and Influence People). Audra is the recipient of many awards for her success with the Dale Carnegie organization in promoting this International Leadership Program.

Matthew has been studying the discipline of martial arts since the age of 5. It all started when his father began teaching in their family garage and Matthew eventually went on to become a 3rd Degree Black Belt. He started his own school at the age of 18 and opened several more shortly after. With over two decades of teaching experience, he has instructed 1,000's of students. Matthew's primary goal has always been to carry on the family mission his father started in 1975.
Matthew is the creator, visionary and producer of Karam's Little Leaders with Black Belt Bruce. He has a driving passion to help children become the very best version of themselves. The “Karam’s Little Leaders” program is one of his proudest accomplishments.

Online - Monthly Class Materials
When you and your family join the Making Friends - Virtual Home Class, you will gain access to your online Learning Management System (LMS) to watch your 4 weekly videos on any device (mobile, tablet, or desktop). Please feel free to view the videos as often as you want to reinforce the lessons.
We highly recommend that you and your child watch these short videos together. We have some families that like to go to the park, pool, etc. to watch and enjoy them. The videos are fun and engaging. **All of the videos are under 7 minutes and only teach one concept.
We encourage you to use the three starter questions after each video to spark a brief conversation with your child to further their understanding and retention of their weekly mission.
Mailed - Monthly Class Materials
After you and your child watch the video and you have your brief chat, they're on their way to earning their rewards (stickers & wristbands)! Then your child can start their Mission for the week!
These Missions put into practice the lessons learned in the video so they can create a new behavior and develop a new habit.
Display the Missions in a place where everyone can see them.
We recommend that you place the calendar in a prominent place in your home. Maybe on the refrigerator or in the family room so that everyone can see the progress being made.
The character stickers are a great way to have your child record and see their progress. They also learn the value of achieving mini-milestones. What child doesn't enjoy putting stickers on a calendar!
The gold star stickers are a great way to record the mastery of a weekly Mission.
These are extra fun activities for your child. These are optional but you would be amazed how much they enjoy doing these activities and enjoy the characters even more.
The Wristband is earned after your child has completed all 4 weekly missions. We recommend that you award the Wristband in the presence of family and friends so that your child feels a great sense of accomplishment. It is these milestones that we want to recognize in your child's life.
Our goal, for your child, is to learn and retain at least a 75% of what they learn with Black Belt Bruce teachings. According to National Laboratories, learning and retention are increased by stacking the activities listed below. Your child will not only learn and retain these life changing behaviors but they can also potentially develop new positive habits.
Looking at the Learning Pyramid below:
The average retention rate by watching a video is 20% for your child.
The average retention rate increases by stacking on discussion to 50% for your child. This is very important for your child.
The average retention rate increases by stacking on practice to 75% for your child. Practicing each skill everyday (through the missions) will really develop your child's new behaviors and habits.
The average retention rate increases by stacking on teaching others to 90% for your child. If your child discusses these lessons with other children or adults then, it is possible that your child will have even higher than 75% retention of the materials learned. This is where new behaviors and habits are formed.
1973 - Current
My father started our marital arts school (1973) in the garage of our home. For many years students came to our home to train and develop new skills to protect themselves.
We slowly grew into many locations throughout Ohio and have taught 1,000+ students over the many years.
Our family mission has always been to provide the very best and most effective techniques that students could rely on in a personal defense situation.
Students have included Senators, Judges, Attorneys, Doctors, Law Enforcement (City, County, and State).
In 1995 My wife and I took over the martial arts school because of my fathers illness. It was then when we worked very hard to distill the martial arts transferable Character and Leadership skills into a duplicatable curriculum that could be shared virtually with all of our current students.
Included are some of the earned recognition for our contribution in our local community.
Unfortunately, because of COVID, we had to close our physical doors and migrate our transferable Character and Leadership skills online (without kicking and punching). This when Black Belt Bruce and Friends were born. We had our students help us to have a drawing contest to vote on the characters they liked best, we also voted on the names of the characters. This has allowed the Family mission to live on.
